IonQ Joins Canada’s FABrIC Quantum Computing Sandbox


IonQ and CMC Microsystems have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that designates IonQ as a cloud access provider for Canada’s FABrIC Quantum Computing Sandbox. This MOU makes IonQ’s trapped-ion systems available to Canadian academics and small-to-medium businesses through the government-funded program.

Agreement details

According to the August 18 press release, the MOU formally lists IonQ as a cloud quantum computing access provider for the sandbox, known as the QCS. Specifically, the QCS operates under FABrIC, a program supported by the Government of Canada’s Strategic Response Fund and managed by CMC Microsystems (operating as Canadian Microelectronics Corporation). The program’s goal is to provide Canadian researchers and smaller companies with opportunities to run jobs on commercial quantum hardware and gain practical experience.

Indeed, an MOU is a statement of intent, outlining the two organizations’ plans to collaborate and ensuring IonQ’s inclusion in the sandbox’s list of providers. That said, the announcement doesn’t specify the anticipated number of users, the amount of available compute time, or the financial implications for the Canadian government or its participants.

In its press release, IonQ refers to itself as “the world’s leading quantum platform company,”  though this is more of a self-designation than an independent ranking. The company’s systems utilize trapped-ion qubits, one of several competing hardware approaches in the quantum sector. IonQ is traded on the NYSE under the ticker IONQ.

Contextualizing the announcement

Executives quoted in the release frame the deal as expanding access. Lisa Lambert, Vice President, Global Strategy and Managing Director, Canada at IonQ, stated that:


“The FABrIC Quantum Computing Sandbox expands access to IonQ’s commercial technology so more Canadian researchers and businesses can start building quantum expertise and real capability now.”

The MOU integrates IonQ into a government-funded program, securing a listed position on a publicly supported platform that directs users to its hardware. This arrangement represents a commercial placement.

For context, the same day brought other quantum announcements, including IBM connecting two modular cryogenic systems and Allot launching a post-quantum communications consortium. In contrast, this IonQ item is a listing agreement, not a completed project. Its success will depend on whether Canadian users actually run workloads on the platform, an outcome for which the release provides no data. Until usage figures become available, this remains a plan on paper.
