QpiAI Opens Quantum Chip Foundry in Bengaluru


QpiAI, an Indian startup, has launched a superconducting quantum processor foundry in Bengaluru, capable of fabricating chips with up to 128 qubits. The company inaugurated the facility’s second phase on August 17 and aims to reach a manufacturing capacity of 10,000 physical qubits by 2027, as reported by YourStory. This figure represents a production goal, not a functional machine, and QpiAI hasn’t yet disclosed any yields or performance specifications.

Facility details and future plans

The new eight-inch fabrication line is located within a 70,000-square-foot research and development center in the Jakkur area, according to the YourStory report. Specifically, QpiAI founder and CEO Nagendra Nagaraja stated that the facility will handle in-house lithography, etching, patterning, assembly, and packaging, alongside research into photonic and semiconductor qubits. Meanwhile, production systems will focus on transmon and fluxonium superconducting designs.

Indeed, the target of 10,000 qubits by 2027 refers to the potential fabrication capacity of the facility’s third phase, not a processor that QpiAI has already built or benchmarked. To date, QpiAI has produced four chips: the eight-qubit QVidya, the 25-qubit Indus, the 64-qubit Kaveri, and the nine-qubit Yukti. Though qubit count is a relevant metric, other factors such as error rates, coherence, connectivity, and gate performance are crucial for determining a system’s practical utility. QpiAI has not yet released these figures for its planned larger devices.

Nagaraja linked this initiative to a supply chain challenge, telling YourStory that existing semiconductor foundries cannot produce all the specialized components the company requires, necessitating the creation of its own manufacturing line:

“Quantum computing today is being held back because there is not enough innovation in manufacturing.”

Investment, courcing, and long-term vision

QpiAI has invested approximately $20 million to $25 million into the facility and anticipates spending an additional $10 million to $15 million as it expands, Nagaraja explainedyourstory. Currently, about 20 percent of its inputs are imported, and the company intends to increase domestic sourcing as output grows. The clean-room areas include Class 100 and Class 1,000 sections, with more equipment planned for future installation.

The company also outlined plans for “Quantum Supremacy Centres,” which would integrate error-corrected processors with AI chip clusters. The first such center would be a 10-acre site with approximately 300,000 square feet of built space. QpiAI plans to establish four more centers outside India but has not yet specified their locations, costs, or timelines.

Founded in 2019, QpiAI secured $32 million in a 2025 Series A funding round, co-led by Avataar Ventures and the National Quantum Mission. The company was one of eight startups that this government program supported. QpiAI’s export markets include the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the U.S.
