Quantum Australia Claims $83.1M Economic Impact
Quantum Australia announced that its national programs generated an estimated $83.1 million in economic value over five years. This figure, calculated as a net present value by the consultancy Avant Group, represents a modeled estimate encompassing grant money, private investment, and signed contracts. The announcement was made at Australia’s inaugural national quantum startup showcase in Canberra, where several early-stage companies, none with publicly disclosed funding, were also presented.
Understanding the $83.1 million figure
The $83.1 million figure, commissioned by Quantum Australia from Avant Group, covers “grant and industry funding mobilized, private investment leveraged, and commercial contracts signed” through the organization’s programs during its two years of operation. Quantum Australia states that this represents more than six times the initial public investment. However, the release doesn’t differentiate between actual revenue and projected activity, nor does it detail how the model attributes wider economic effects specifically to the organization.
Quantum Australia also reported facilitating the creation of 15 new quantum companies, establishing 110 industry-research partnerships, and securing over $50 million in grant funding. The release doesn’t specify the recipients or contract values associated with these figures.

Six early-stage ventures presented at the showcase, held at New Parliament House:
- FeBI Technologies utilizes quantum sensing to assess a patient’s iron status.
- QFactorial aims to reduce fuel and route costs for freight and mining operations.
- SpaceCoLAB has developed a briefcase-sized system that transmits data as quantum states, detecting any interception.
- Quantum Lock enables operators to verify whether a device, from power stations to satellites, has been tampered with.
- Gridstate is developing an error-correction module for photonic quantum computers.
- Cirnetiq manufactures amplifiers for the faint signals within quantum hardware.
Each company was described as “investment-ready,” indicating a stage of development. None of the six have discovered any funding amounts, customer details, or shipping dates.
A Japanese delegation attended the event, following the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between Australia and Japan. This memorandum establishes a framework for collaboration on research, talent, and commercialization, without specific funding or deliverables attached. Quantum Australia, established in 2024, receives support from the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, various state governments, and 13 university partners. The organization also announced the formation of a new Canberra team based at the Australian National University.
