D-Wave Receives Up to CAD $300,000 from Canadian Research Council

D-Wave Quantum has received a grant of up to CAD $300,000 from the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) to develop software for its Advantage2 annealing systems. This funding, provided through the NRC’s Applied Quantum Computing Challenge program, specifically supports algorithm development rather than hardware or a marketable product. The sum is modest, and the initiative represents a research collaboration that has not yet yielded customer-ready results.

Funding allocation

The project focuses on developing graph minor-embedding algorithms tailored for D-Wave’s Zephyr topology. Embedding is a crucial step that maps an optimization problem onto the physical arrangement of qubits within an annealing processor; improved embedding allows systems to tackle larger problems. D-Wave’s team at its Quantum Centre of Engineering Excellence in Burnaby, British Columbia, will create these new algorithms and integrate them into the company’s open-source Ocean software development kit.

D-Wave anticipates that the resulting software will enable its Advantage2 machines to address more extensive and intricate problems in fields such as logistics, manufacturing, scheduling, resource allocation, machine learning, and materials simulation. This list represents projected applications, not achieved outcomes. The company positions Advantage2 as its primary annealing platform and offers both annealing and gate-model systems.

According to the August 12 report, Trevor Lanting, D-Wave’s chief development officer, emphasized the commercial implications of this work:

“Software innovation is essential to expanding the performance and commercial impact of quantum computing. Through our collaboration with the NRC, we aim to develop next-generation software that extends the capabilities of our Advantage2 annealing quantum computers, enables customers to solve larger and more complex optimization problems, and strengthens Canada’s world-class quantum ecosystem.”

Program details and funding scale

The Applied Quantum Computing Challenge program is an NRC initiative with an aim to foster quantum commercialization in Canada by uniting government, industry, and academic partners. D-Wave’s award falls under this framework. CAD $300,000 is a relatively small grant within the quantum funding landscape, and this figure represents a maximum, meaning D-Wave may receive less.

This funding is for software research, not a product launch or a hardware achievement. D-Wave already operates its Advantage2 annealing systems and distributes Ocean as open-source software, so this grant enhances existing tools rather than introducing new ones. The actual gains these embedding algorithms provide on real workloads will be demonstrated later through benchmarks, which the current release doesn’t include.
