Tennessee Starts Teaching Quantum in Kindergarten With TN QuantumWorks

Tennessee is putting quantum computing into school classrooms, starting as early as kindergarten. The Chattanooga Quantum Collaborative launched TN QuantumWorks, a K-12 quantum technology and career awareness programme built by Dane and Sheila Boyington of Thinking Media and supported by the state’s Department of Labor and Workforce Development. It will run first as a pilot in Hamilton County Schools before any wider rollout.

How TN QuantumWorks teaches quantum at every grade

According to the July 17 press release, the curriculum scales with age. Specifically, elementary students meet quantum ideas through games and discovery activities. Middle schoolers get into qubits and superposition, the properties that let quantum computers handle information differently from ordinary machines. High school students look at applications, algorithms, and career paths, and the most advanced can write quantum programs and run them on real hardware.

Sheila Boyington, CEO of Thinking Media, put the aim in modest terms. “Our goal isn’t to turn every student into a quantum physicist,” she said, describing it instead as sparking curiosity and showing students careers they might not know exist.

“Just as computer science became essential over the past generation, quantum literacy will become increasingly important during the next. (…) Every student deserves the opportunity to understand technologies that will shape their future.”

Why Chattanooga is launching the program first

The program is less abstract than it might be elsewhere, because the local infrastructure already exists. Chattanooga is home to EPB Quantum Center, which offers commercial access to quantum computing and networking and houses an IonQ Forte Enterprise machine. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga runs quantum degree programs and will link students to higher education pathways, Chattanooga State is adding quantum material to technical coursework, and the collaborative already runs a quantum pre-apprenticeship. Some local teachers have trained through Sandia National Laboratories.

That means students can see working equipment rather than only read about it, which is the practical difference between this and a standard curriculum announcement.

That said, a few things were not disclosed: funding, how many students are involved, and any timeline for expanding past the Hamilton County pilot. The release also cites projections of trillions of dollars in future quantum economic value, a common industry estimate that remains speculative. This is the state’s second quantum push in recent weeks, after a $3 million fund to attract NSF-backed quantum startups.
