Israel Plans a National Quantum Facility That Backs No Single Technology

Israel is soliciting bids to build a national quantum computing research facility, and it is deliberately declining to pick a winning technology. The Israel Innovation Authority’s call for proposals requires the operator to integrate at least three different quantum processing technologies under one roof. The stated reason is refreshingly plain: no approach has proven itself better than the others yet.

Why Israel wants three quantum technologies

According to the July 20 press release, the call says outright that no single quantum computing technology has demonstrated clear superiority over competing approaches, and that interoperability between hardware types remains limited. Rather than choosing between superconducting, trapped-ion, photonic, or other designs, the facility aims to let companies and researchers run the same problem on several and compare.

That makes benchmarking a core function rather than an afterthought. The goal of the infrastructure is to serve as Israel’s national center for evaluating and adopting quantum technology, offering services across the full stack, from qubits and control systems through error correction to algorithms and applications, plus proof-of-concept work, startup support, and training.

What companies must deliver to win the contract

The operational requirements are more demanding than most such programmes. Whoever wins must have the infrastructure fully established within 18 months of approval and start providing R&D services within the first 12, including hardware access, cloud services, and algorithm evaluation across multiple technologies. The operator also has to meet defined service levels and keep upgrading to the newest version of each platform as the market moves.

The call is open to industrial corporations and user consortia.

That said, this is a call for proposals, so the clock for choosing an operator and building technologies starts only on approval. And while the initiative has been reported at NIS 100 million, the Innovation Authority’s announcement does not state a figure, so the funding level is worth confirming.

It is Israel’s latest quantum move, following recent work by Quantum Source with the country’s defence research directorate.
