Maybell Brings Dilution Refrigerators to New Mexico’s Quantum Lab
Maybell Quantum will install four dilution refrigerators at New Mexico’s Roadrunner Quantum Lab and hire staff in the state. The Colorado company is the third to commit hardware to the Albuquerque facility, after Qunnect and QuEra Computing. The equipment addresses a specific bottleneck for early-stage quantum companies.
Why dilution refrigerators matter for quantum startups
Specifically, superconducting and spin qubits only hold their quantum states at temperatures near absolute zero, in the millikelvin range. Dilution refrigerators get them there, and they’re expensive and difficult for a startup to source, which means founders often spend years and considerable money assembling test infrastructure before proving anything works.
According to the July 20 press release, the Roadrunner setup is designed to be shared. Maybell says its facilities can run several companies at once, with room for five or more teams and 20 to 30 researchers in dedicated lab spaces. The company will also put staff on site to support tenants and recruit new ones.
How Roadrunner Quantum Lab is expanding
The lab came out of a public-private partnership announced in August 2025, when Economic Development New Mexico committed $25 million to an effort led by Roadrunner Venture Studios. That sits inside a larger $450 million state quantum investment, though only the $25 million ties directly to this facility.
Qunnect launched an open-access quantum network in Albuquerque and QuEra committed a $4 million testbed. With Maybell’s cryogenics added, the lab covers more of what a quantum startup needs in one place. Sandia, Los Alamos, and the University of New Mexico are already using its resources, and the facility is due to open to tenants in the fall.
Maybell did not disclose the value of its commitment. Claims that the lab will let founders validate technology faster than anywhere else are the partners’ own. The announcement follows New Mexico’s recent $1.2 million in grants to six quantum companies, part of the same push to build a cluster around the state’s national labs.
