Xanadu Aims for 1,000 Logical Qubits by 2031


On August 31, Xanadu unveiled an updated technology roadmap, targeting over 1,000 logical qubits by 2031. This includes a fault-tolerance milestone projected for 2028-2029. The Toronto-based photonic company presented these goals as its strategy for achieving utility-scale quantum computing.

Roadmap Details

Specifically, Xanadu’s plan centers on reducing photon loss, identified as the primary source of error in its architecture. Indeed, the company aims to decrease its loss indicator from 24.1x in 2026 to 1.0x by 2030. Concurrently, it projects logical error rates improving to 10⁻¹⁶ by 2030, alongside an increase in logical qubit count: up to 200 by 2029, up to 500 by 2030, and exceeding 1,000 the following year.

Additional initiatives include the construction of a Qubit Factory in 2026-2027 and a quantum data center in 2029-2030. Xanadu’s error-correction method combines GKP encoding with quantum LDPC codes. The company states that its photonic systems operate at room temperature and can be fabricated using silicon processes. To support testing and packaging, Xanadu is expanding its 158,000-square-foot Toronto facility, known as Inception.

All figures beyond 2026 are projections. Competing roadmaps from vendors utilizing superconducting and trapped-ion technologies make similarly ambitious projections, none of whom have yet demonstrated a thousand logical qubits.

Christian Weedbrook, Founder and CEO, offered this statement in the release, including an inherent obstacle:

“We’ve dramatically reduced our loss ratio, and this progress gives us confidence in reaching fault tolerance in 2028-2029. What remains is largely a challenge in materials, fabrication, and systems engineering, along with further architecture optimizations. We believe our approach is well-suited to address these as we scale from fault tolerance to a networked quantum data center by the end of the decade.”

Software and Financial Position

Xanadu also provided details on PennyLane, its open-source development platform. The company reports approximately 1.1 million package installs per month, 51 reachable devices through a single API, and a 30.8% usage share among surveyed developers over the past year. These statistics originate from Xanadu and an unspecified industry survey.

Financially, as of June 30, 2026, Xanadu reports approximately US$686 million in total available funding. This comprises $312.8 million in cash, $232.8 million in remaining capacity under an at-the-market equity facility with Yorkville Advisors, and around $140.2 million in confirmed Canadian government funding via Project OPTIMISM. It’s important to note that the equity facility represents capacity to raise funds, not readily available cash. Commercial revenue is targeted for 2029-2030, indicating that paying customers are still years away from today’s demonstrated hardware.
