Symmatrics Launches AI and Post-Quantum Readiness Pledge


Symmatrics, a Virginia-based encryption vendor, has introduced a voluntary AI & Post-Quantum Readiness Pledge. This initiative asks organizations to commit to preparing their cryptography for the threats posed by the quantum era. According to a press release on September 1, ten founding signatories endorsed the pledge at the company’s Tysons Corner headquarters that opened on July 27. The pledge serves as a public declaration of intent to plan, and it doesn’t test or validate any signatory’s security.

Pledge Requirements

Specifically, the document outlines five key steps. Signatories agree to inventory their cryptographic assets, identify systems vulnerable to “harvest-now-decrypt-later” risks, develop a migration plan aligned with NIST’s post-quantum standards, inquire with their vendors about migration timelines, and report progress to leadership or a board at least annually. These are planning-oriented tasks, none of which necessitate the deployment of new cryptography. The pledge explicitly states that participation does’nt certify, guarantee, or warrant any security outcome or compliance status.

The initial group of signatories consists primarily of professional services and local partners. This cohort includes Dulles Law, Next PR, AutogenAI, the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority, and the Global Symmetric Key Infrastructure Consortium. Symmatrics organized this group and is extending invitations for additional organizations to sign.

The company frames this effort in the context of recent U.S. policy. NIST has published its PQC standards (FIPS 203, 204, and 205), and two executive orders in June have directed federal agencies to adopt NIST-approved algorithms with migration deadlines for high-value systems. This federal push is a significant factor. The pledge is a private-sector awareness initiative, layered on top of this government mandate, and convened by a vendor with a product to sell.

The Underlying Marketing Strategy

Symmatrics positions itself as a pioneer of Internet-scale one-time-pad symmetric encryption, describing its Integrated Trust Layer as a “mathematically-unbreakable solution.” These are the company’s own assertions and warrant careful examination.

A one-time pad is demonstrably secure only under stringent conditions, including keys being as long as the message, used only once, and delivered without compromise. Claiming this at internet scale represents a strong marketing position, not a validated engineering outcome. Symmatrics hasn’t provided any third-party audit or standards body endorsement in this announcement.

Though the pledge directs signatories toward NIST-aligned migration (the standardized path), Symmatrics’ own trust layer utilizes proprietary symmetric-key technology. This technology is distinct from NIST PQC and hasn’t undergone public standards vetting. As Drew Davis, SVP of Strategy, stated:

“Organizations best positioned for the quantum era will be those whose leaders choose to act before they are forced to.”

As no cryptographically relevant quantum computer currently exists, the timeline for these developments remains uncertain. The pledge involves no signing fee and commits no one to purchasing anything, which accurately reflects the nature of this initiative.
