SandboxAQ Tests GPS-Free Navigation on Northrop Grumman Drone


SandboxAQ announced it successfully flew its AQNav magnetic navigation software on a Northrop Grumman Lumberjack drone without GPS. The company describes this as the first reported test of magnetic navigation on an attritable platform. Additionally, SandboxAQ claims this is the first time magnetic and visual navigation were paired on a one-way attack drone.

What Was Tested

SandboxAQ publicly announced the test in a September 9 press release. The test platform was Northrop Grumman’s Lumberjack, a Group 3 UAS classified by the manufacturer as a loitering munition. SandboxAQ stated that its engineers installed AQNav on the drone’s existing compute hardware in under an hour.

Northrop Grumman program manager Max Schuster commented that the collaboration would “ensure our joint forces have an operationally validated navigation capability in even the most contested domains.” Luca Ferrara, SandboxAQ navigation general manager, called AQNav’s positioning “unjammable.”

How Magnetic Navigation Works

Magnetic anomaly navigation determines position by matching onboard magnetometer readings against pre-built maps of Earth’s geomagnetic field. This method does not rely on satellite signals, making it suitable for GPS-denied environments. SandboxAQ refers to AQNav as “quantum-enabled” in its X post and press release title. However, no independent source confirms the magnetometer used is a quantum device, such as an atomic magnetometer, so this label remains SandboxAQ’s own branding. The company states that AI-based, physics-driven models process the sensor data in real-time.

What’s Missing From the Report

Crucial data is missing from the announcement. There is no information on positioning accuracy, drift figures, flight duration, altitude, weather conditions, or a side-by-side comparison with GPS ground truth. Without this information, claims of “unjammable” and “operationally validated” navigation remain unverified vendor statements. AQNav has undergone previous testing, including with the US Air Force and on C-17 and C-130J aircraft, according to SandboxAQ. The Lumberjack event represents a flight test and status update, not a fielded deployment or a signed production contract.
