Terra Quantum and Apex.AI Demo Post-Quantum Security for Robots

Quantum technology company Terra Quantum and security software provider Apex.AI have shown NIST-standardized post-quantum cryptography running between a robotics software stack and a cloud control system. The demonstration pairs Terra Quantum’s quantum-resistant algorithms with Apex.AI’s Apex.OS, the software layer for connected machines and software-defined vehicles. The companies say it swaps in quantum-safe encryption without forcing changes to the application or how it talks to the cloud.

How the post-quantum demonstration worked

According to the July 23 press release, the point of the exercise is compatibility. Rather than redesigning the software, the two replaced the vulnerable cryptographic pieces underneath it and kept the existing communication patterns intact.

That claim is the companies’ own, tested between themselves rather than verified by an outside party. Also, this is a demonstration and not yet a product or a customer deployment. No scale or timeline was disclosed, and there’s no named customer.

Why long-lived robots need post-quantum cryptography

The reason to care is service life. A software-defined vehicle or an industrial robot built today can stay in operation for years or decades, which means it has to remain secure past the point where a quantum computer could break current encryption. The same “harvest now, decrypt later” logic drives post-quantum work in finance and crypto custody, and it applies here to machines that sit on the edge of a network.

Terra Quantum CEO Markus Pflitsch framed it as a reason not to wait, arguing the systems shipping now will still be running when quantum computers challenge current cryptography. The release reaches further, into NATO multi-domain operations and cross-domain “Systems-of-Systems,” but that part is positioning more than substance.
