Diraq Opens Santa Monica Quantum Technology Hub


Diraq, an Australian company specializing in silicon spin qubits, has opened a technology hub in Santa Monica, California. This new office, currently staffed by 20 individuals, will focus on integrated circuit design, software, device modeling, and machine learning. The company plans to double its headcount within the next 12 months.

Office focus and operations

According to the August 25 press release by Diraq, the Santa Monica office serves as an engineering hub, with responsibilities encompassing integrated circuit design and architecture, software development, device modeling, and machine learning, as detailed in the company’s announcement. Diraq indicates that this team will collaborate with its existing locations in Sydney, Palo Alto, and Chicago. Notably, Chicago hosts the company’s first U.S. laboratory dedicated to qubit measurement and cryogenic CMOS testing.

Diraq identifies Southern California as a key source of quantum engineering talent, a perspective the company itself emphasizes. The stated objective of expanding to approximately 40 staff over the coming year is a future target, not the current number. Specific details regarding investment amounts, lease agreements, or the hiring budget weren’t disclosed.

The company develops quantum processors utilizing silicon spin qubits and CMOS-compatible manufacturing. This approach, Diraq suggests, could eventually enable millions of qubits on a single chip. This “millions of qubits” figure represents a long-term projection and doesn’t describe any operational device from Diraq today.

Andrew Dzurak, CEO and founder, linked this expansion directly to recruitment efforts:

“Succeeding in quantum computing requires securing the best talent as much as engineering the best technology,” Dzurak commented.

Long-term product timeline

Diraq anticipates its first product launch in 2029. This date is part of their roadmap, and the company frames its U.S. sites as steps toward developing what it refers to as utility-scale, fault-tolerant systems.

The Santa Monica opening coincides with other quantum news in the U.S. this week, including DOE grants for quantum research in high-energy physics and an NSF renewal for Illinois-led modular quantum computing work. Unlike these, which involve committed funding, Diraq’s announcement does not.

For those following Diraq’s progress, the primary takeaway is modest. The company is expanding its engineering team on the U.S. West Coast and organizing its operations across four sites. Whether this will accelerate its 2029 timeline remains to be seen and will be demonstrated by future results.
