NatWest Joins UK Quantum Trial to Explore Fraud Detection
NatWest is trialing quantum computing to see whether it can help detect fraud, joining a UK programme that pairs businesses with quantum tools. The retail bank is one of 11 organizations in the latest cohort of Digital Catapult’s Quantum Technology Access Programme, run with the National Quantum Computing Centre. The details were reported by Computer Weekly.
How the Quantum Technology Access Programme works
Specifically, the program, known as QTAP and now in its third year, gives UK companies a guided path to test quantum technology on their own problems, with this cohort focused on combinatorial optimization and quantum machine learning.
According to the July 17 report, it runs until February 2027 and uses hardware from technical partner ORCA Computing. Earlier participants have included Vodafone, Airbus, Rolls-Royce, the Port of Dover, and the UK Atomic Energy Authority, which gives a sense of the programme’s reach.
Why NatWest is testing quantum for fraud detection
NatWest’s interest is fraud. The bank plans to explore whether quantum methods can help spot fraud and illicit activity across large transaction networks, a natural fit for the optimization problems this cohort is studying.
The other standout is in healthcare: Health Innovation North West Coast is testing quantum modeling to improve diagnosis and treatment forecasting for TTP, a rare and dangerous blood disorder, using ORCA’s PT-2 machine. Other participants are looking at legacy-to-cloud transaction systems, rail safety, and logistics.
It’s worth keeping the framing straight. These are trials and feasibility studies, not deployments, and whether quantum delivers an advantage on any of these problems is exactly what the program aims to find out. Digital Catapult’s Paul Ceely said quantum is “no longer a theoretical concept” and described the UK’s sovereign quantum capability as world-leading, both of which are the organization’s own framing rather than settled fact.
