UK Scraps Its Science Department, Leaving Quantum Without a Clear Home

The UK has abolished the department that coordinated its technology strategy, and quantum computing has lost its dedicated political home in the process. New Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who took office on July 20, dissolved the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and split its work across other ministries, according to the BBC. At the same time, AI minister Kanishka Narayan was given a seat in Cabinet.

What the government reshuffle changes for quantum

Indeed, DSIT launched in 2023 to run the country’s science and technology agenda, and it oversaw quantum alongside AI, semiconductors, and digital infrastructure. Its dissolution removes the standalone technology secretary role and distributes those responsibilities, per the BBC’s July 21 report. The clear signal is the elevation of AI: it now has direct representation at the highest level of government, whereas quantum and other advanced fields no longer sit under one coordinating department.

What happens to the UK’s quantum strategy now?

The UK has spent a decade building its quantum sector through the National Quantum Technologies Program and long-term funding commitments, all of which depend on coordination across research institutions, industry, defense, and regulators. Splitting DSIT’s functions across departments could make that coordination harder.

The important thing to note here is that existing programs and strategies remain in place unless separately revised, so this is a change in oversight structure, not a cut to quantum funding. Nothing about the money has changed on the basis of this reshuffle.

There is also a plausible upside, though it is more of an analysis than a fact. AI and quantum draw on overlapping infrastructure, high-performance computing, advanced semiconductors, and reliable power, and AI is increasingly present in calibrating quantum processors and design quantum materials. If AI’s higher political profile drives investment in that shared foundation, quantum could benefit indirectly.

For now the practical questions are open: which department picks up quantum, and whether losing a single coordinating home slows a strategy that took years to assemble.
