U.S. War Department Launches $200M Quantum Sensing Initiative

The U.S. Department of War has launched a new initiative that could invest up to $200 million over the next year to accelerate the deployment of quantum sensing technologies for military use. Announced by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), the multi-phase program is designed to transition mature quantum sensing and timing systems from laboratories into operational use, which supports President Donald Trump’s recent quantum innovation executive order. The effort focuses on improving battlefield intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, and strengthening the domestic quantum industry.

Quantum sensors target next-generation battlefield awareness

According to the Department of War’s June 23 press release, the initiative seeks to overcome the long-standing trade-off between sensor sensitivity and size, weight and power (SWaP) that limits conventional ISR systems.

Specifically, unlike classical electric, magnetic, and gravitational sensors, quantum technologies can deliver high sensitivity without requiring large, power-hungry hardware. DIU plans to develop deployable quantum electric field sensors, magnetometers, gravimeters and tactical clocks capable of providing highly accurate timing and detecting weak signals across aerial, surface and subsurface missions.

Kyle Norman, who leads DIU’s quantum sensing team, said accelerating the deployment and commercialization of quantum sensing technologies is essential to maintaining U.S. military superiority in battlefield awareness, operational decision-making and overall combat effectiveness. In his words:

“The United States Department of War must accelerate deployment and commercialization of quantum sensing to maintain superiority of knowledge of the battle space, speed of decision and operational dominance.”

$200M investment aims to speed commercialization

The initiative revolves around four primary lines of effort: electric field sensors and magnetometers, gravity gradiometers, tactical clocks, and component technology development.

Rather than relying solely on defense contractors, the Department intends to leverage commercial technologies developed for industries such as mineral exploration, oil and gas surveying, and advanced medical imaging. Officials believe this dual-use approach can reduce development costs and accelerate deployment to military users.

The Department said the investment aims to send a strong demand signal to the private sector, and encourage companies to expand manufacturing capacity and strengthen quantum technology supply chains. By doing so, the government hopes to accelerate the transition of quantum sensing technologies from research labs into both defense applications and wider commercial markets.

The DIU is now accepting solution briefs from interested companies through its proposal portal, with submissions expected to emphasize innovative technologies that can operate reliably in demanding military environments.
