Qunnect Teams With Monarch to Shrink Its Quantum Network Hardware
Qunnect and the photonics firm Monarch Quantum have announced a partnership to build smaller, manufacturable versions of Qunnect’s quantum networking hardware for use outside the lab. The plan is to shrink Carina, Qunnect’s entanglement-distribution system, into rugged form factors for defense, space, and telecom deployments. The announcement carries no funding, product, or timeline, so it’s an intent to build, not a finished system.
The hard part is now manufacturing
What makes this more than the usual partnership announcement is Qunnect’s track record. Its Carina platform is already running quantum networking deployments on two continents, putting it among a small group building networks on entanglement and not on ordinary signals, and its polarization-stabilization hardware is what let a NIST-led team keep entanglement alive across 62 kilometers of exposed, above-ground fiber.
So the company has cleared the science bar that trips up most quantum-networking pitches. The problem it is now naming is a different one, turning lab-grade boxes into hardware that can be mass-produced and dropped into the field. Monarch, which builds miniaturized photonic engines, is the manufacturing half of that. Qunnect CEO Noel Goddard explained the thesis:
“Commercial quantum networking will require more than scientific breakthroughs. It will require robust systems, deployable form factors, repeatable production, and scalable supply chains.”
What to hold in proportion
The release runs well ahead of the deal. It lists a long menu of eventual uses, satellites, edge computing, IoT, defense platforms, and a vision of a “global quantum internet,” most of which remain aspirations rather than working products; a recent industry roadmap found only two of ten quantum-network applications work today.
What entanglement-based networking actually does now is distribute quantum-secure keys and correlations over fiber, a real capability that’s still early and short-range, and a long way from the quantum internet the headline gestures at. This partnership is a step toward making that hardware cheaper and tougher, and nothing here has shipped yet.
