New Mexico Backs Quantinuum Expansion With $1.5M
New Mexico and the City of Albuquerque will each contribute $750,000, totaling a $1.5 million public subsidy, to support Quantinuum’s expansion into a new research hub in Albuquerque. These funds, coming from the Local Economic Development Act, will go to a facility the company plans to construct. This commitment represents a taxpayer-backed investment in real estate and hiring, and the projected jobs and economic impact are estimates.

Specifically, Quantinuum intends to transform a vacant building at 5501 Wilshire into laboratories and offices. According to the August 18 report, the primary focus of this work is integrated photonics research, which the company identifies as a key component of its roadmap for trapped-ion quantum computers. This expansion marks a second venture in Albuquerque for Quantinuum, which already operates a 6,000-square-foot facility near Balloon Fiesta Park, secured last year.
Indeed, state and city officials suggest this expansion could generate dozens of high-skilled jobs and significant economic impact over the next decade. Meanwhile, these figures are government estimates.
Quantinuum, headquartered in Broomfield, Colorado, launched in 2021 through the merger of Cambridge Quantum and Honeywell Quantum Solutions. The company specializes in trapped-ion hardware and software. Integrated photonics is crucial for this platform, as transitioning from bulk optics to on-chip components is a viable strategy for scaling ion-trap systems.
Stakeholder perspectives
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, Mayor Tim Keller, Economic Development Secretary Rob Black, and Economic Development Director Max Gruner all expressed support for the deal. Jennifer Strabley, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Quantinuum’s Compute Platforms Group, connected the new site to the company’s technical objectives.

New Mexico is strategically fostering a quantum technology cluster, and this agreement is one element of that broader expenditure.
