Infleqtion, Cisco Partner on Networked Quantum Systems


Infleqtion and Cisco have announced a research collaboration to explore connecting quantum computers and sensors into networks. This initiative, dated September 10, 2026, focuses on joint research and development rather than an existing system or a functional network transmitting quantum information between locations.

Details of the Collaboration

According to a corresponding notice on Infleqtion’s site, the collaboration will address the connection, operation, and scaling of distributed quantum systems. Infleqtion identifies itself as a leader in quantum computing and sensing utilizing neutral-atom technology. 

Cisco, known for its networking hardware and software, operates Cisco Quantum Labs, a research group dedicated to developing network architectures for quantum devices.

Key research areas include converting quantum states from neutral-atom memory into optical channels, coordinating workloads across interconnected systems, and linking distributed sensors to computing nodes. Pranav Gokhale, CTO of Infleqtion, stated that the objective is to “connect these systems together the same way the internet emerged from connecting many classical computers.” 

Ramana Kompella, head of Cisco Research, believes that networking systems together will drive the next advancement. Both statements highlight future aspirations rather than current capabilities.

Scope and Limitations

Separately, Cisco showcased a research prototype called the Universal Quantum Switch, described as a device for routing quantum information. Still, a laboratory prototype does not equate to an operational network. The collaboration announcement lacks specific figures such as link distances, photon rates, memory lifetimes, qubit counts, or error rates. Infleqtion’s current live system scale is also not provided, making it difficult to assess the distributed-computing ambition against existing capabilities.

The available information suggests a focus on networking quantum computers and sensors, rather than quantum key distribution or post-quantum cryptography, although the truncated release leaves some ambiguity. This research collaboration does not imply immediate quantum advantage or the development of a fault-tolerant machine. The wider context of this activity includes initiatives like the EU’s planned Quantum Act and Fujitsu’s open-source quantum package. For now, the two companies have outlined areas of inquiry.
