Finland is Bolting a Quantum Computer onto One of the World’s Fastest Supercomputers
Europe placed a bet on where quantum computing is heading, and it comes with a delivery date.
The LUMI AI Factory, run by Finland’s CSC – IT Center for Science, has picked IQM Quantum Computers to build a machine called IQM Halocene H4. It lands in 2027 and plugs straight into the LUMI supercomputer. Once it’s connected, it’ll get a new name: LUMI-IQ. IQM trades as IQMX on Nasdaq and Helsinki, so this is a public company putting a number on the line.
Per IQM’s prospectus from July 1, 2026, the contract is about the size of the company’s entire revenue for 2025. One deal, one year of the whole business.
What lands in 2027
According to a July 8 press release, the 2027 system shows up with a 150-qubit quantum processing unit. And that’s the starting line.
Specifically, Halocene H4 is a superconducting machine you keep on-premises, and IQM calls it the first of its kind to pair quantum error correction with the noisy NISQ qubits everyone’s been living with for years. Error correction is the hard part of this whole field. It’s the difference between a quantum computer that’s a lab curiosity and one you can trust to finish a long calculation without the answer dissolving into noise.
Meanwhile, the plan doesn’t stop at 150 qubits. Indeed, IQM will ship upgrades in phases, each one adding logical qubits and pushing the system toward fault tolerance. So the same hardware that arrives as a research toy in 2027 is meant to grow into something you’d hand a serious workload.
“Already the first system delivered in 2027 will come with a state-of-the-art quantum processing unit (QPU) with 150 qubits. This is only the beginning, however,” said Mikael Johansson, Manager for Quantum Technologies at CSC. “Over the next years, LUMI-IQ will evolve into a fault-tolerant quantum computer through a series of upgrades that increase both qubit count and performance, making the LUMI AI Factory a world-leading European hybrid platform combining AI and quantum computing.”
Why bolt it to LUMI
LUMI is already one of the most powerful supercomputers on the planet. Adding a quantum processor next to it means researchers can hand the quantum chip the pieces it’s good at and let the classical machine handle the rest. Hybrid computing, in plain terms.
For LUMI’s users, the interesting first is error correction. Consortium members will get to design and test QEC concepts on a top-tier system, which most academic groups have never had sitting down the hall. The stated goal is joint R&D on the road to fault-tolerant machines, plus a shot at spinning off commercial ideas along the way.
“As part of the LUMI AI Factory, LUMI-IQ will bring together world-leading AI, data, high-performance computing and quantum acceleration in one powerful hybrid environment,” said Kimmo Koski, Managing Director of CSC. He pointed to applications across materials, health, energy and fundamental science, and to a second payoff that’s less flashy but might be the whole point, building up Europe’s own skills and know-how for what comes next.
The politics under the hardware
This isn’t only Finland’s project. LUMI-IQ is jointly funded by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking along with Finland, Czechia, Norway, and Poland. Four countries and a pan-European body chipping in for one machine tells you how much weight the continent is putting on not falling behind.
IQM’s CEO framed it as a coming-of-age moment. “CSC and the LUMI AI Factory are exactly the kind of partners that define what production quantum computing looks like in practice — world-class HPC infrastructure, a deep commitment to research excellence, and the ambition to lead rather than follow,” said Jan Goetz, CEO and Co-founder of IQM. “Delivering IQM Halocene to CSC means Europe’s most powerful quantum computer will sit at the heart of one of the world’s leading research computing environments. This is a milestone for IQM, CSC, for Finland, and for the European quantum ecosystem.”
Where this leaves IQM
The company has a habit of landing these deals. IQM says it’s sold 23 quantum systems worldwide, more than any other hardware maker, with machines already running inside four of the top supercomputing centers. It also recently pulled off a dual listing on Nasdaq and the Helsinki exchange, the first European quantum firm to go public.
Still, a 150-qubit machine in 2027 that “evolves into” fault tolerance remains a promise, and the whole industry has a long record of roadmaps that slipped. Error rates are still high and logical qubits are still expensive. Nobody has shipped the fully scalable version everyone’s chasing.
Still, a delivery date and a signed contract worth a year of revenue beat another press release about someday. Finland decided to buy hardware and learn on it now. That’s the part I’d keep an eye on.
