Bridgewater State Gets $380K for Quantum Teaching Hardware


Bridgewater State University (BSU) has received funding of approximately $380,000 by the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative to acquire quantum systems for undergraduate education. The funding will cover the purchase of a two-qubit optical quantum computer, an NV-defect diamond sensor, and a commercial quantum key distribution (QKD) and random number generation (QRNG) setup. These systems will go to classroom and laboratory use.

What the Funding Provides

According to the August 27 press release, the award comes from MassTech’s Technology and Innovation Ecosystem program. It will finance three pieces of hardware that BSU has already ordered and will install upon arrival. The two-qubit optical computer and the diamond sensor are small, demonstration-scale systems designed to teach students how the technology functions. The fact that these are teaching instruments reflects in their modest capabilities; two qubits are significantly fewer than what commercial quantum processors typically utilize.

The QKD and QRNG system will integrate with BSU’s existing Cyber Security Range. QKD leverages quantum properties to distribute encryption keys and is being explored as a method to protect communications from future quantum computers capable of breaking current cryptographic standards. A QRNG generates random numbers from a quantum source. Neither of these systems provides post-quantum cryptography in the manner standardized by NIST under FIPS 203, 204, and 205. Furthermore, no quantum computer capable of breaking today’s encryption currently exists.

The university views this acquisition as a strategic investment in workforce preparation. Ed Deveney, a physics professor at BSU, linked the initiative to state hiring demands:

“Massachusetts has established itself as a global leader in quantum technology, but that leadership requires a workforce at every level. We need scientists and engineers with Ph.D.s, but we also need people with bachelor’s degrees and technical expertise who can build, operate and advance these technologies.”

Context of the Award

Given that this award funds education and equipment, its scale should be understood within that context. It represents a modest state grant to a public university, aimed at providing hands-on experience for students in physics, cybersecurity, and photonics. BSU has offered quantum coursework since Deveney established its Lab for Quantum Studies in 1999, and the institution provides a bachelor’s degree in photonics and optical engineering.

Massachusetts has a history of investing public funds into its quantum sector. QNews has previously reported on larger state and national commitments, including Canada’s CAD $195 million for Xanadu’s manufacturing plans. In comparison to such figures, the BSU grant is smaller and specifically targeted at teaching. The acquired systems will need to be delivered and integrated before students can begin using them.
