George Mason Plans $7.7M Quantum Computer With TreQ


George Mason University and Oxford-based TreQ have announced plans to install a $7.7 million quantum computing system at a Northern Virginia campus. Indeed, the system is slated for delivery in early 2027, with commissioning anticipated for late summer of the same year. This announcement, made on September 2, details a partnership and a purchase. Specifics regarding qubit count or computational capabilities have not yet been disclosed.

Announcement Facts

Specifically, the partnership highlights the system as the first U.S. deployment of TreQ’s proprietary Open Architecture Quantum framework. George Mason University is funding the project with support from the Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation, a state economic development agency. 

TreQ will be responsible for the design, deployment, and operation of the hardware, as well as collaborating with the university on research and curriculum development. TreQ, which lists 1 to 10 employees on TQI’s platform, describes its mission as building prototypes for next-generation computing.

Meanwhile, the stated timelines are targets. Delivery aims for early 2027, with commissioning scheduled for late summer 2027. A detailed public specification sheet will come out after the system’s commissioning and characterization. 

The press release doesn’t specify the qubit count, modality, error rates, or which processors the “open architecture” will support at its launch. TreQ CEO Mandy Birch frames open architecture as a flexible design intended to allow for the integration of various processors and software as they evolve.

Economic Projections from Involved Parties

George Mason President Gregory Washington referenced projections of a multi-trillion-dollar quantum economy within the next decade. The release also points to a forecast of up to $2.7 trillion in international economic value by 2035, citing a Virginia Business article. These are third-party forecasts that the university and its partners have an interest in disseminating.

Birch commented on the deployment:


“This first deployment creates a foundation Virginia can keep building on, and we’re glad to be part of George Mason’s vision for what comes next.”

Related initiatives are further along than the quantum computer itself. George Mason has launched a master’s degree in quantum science and engineering, committed a $2.4 million catalyst investment, and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with two Korean quantum organizations. 

Its Quantum Science and Engineering Center comprises 24 faculty members across seven departments. According to QSEC Director Patrick Vora, this agreement will grant faculty and students access to quantum hardware for the first time, an access that will commence after commissioning, which is still over a year away.
