Riverlane Funds Open-Source Work on Its Quantum Error Correction Toolkit

Riverlane and the Unitary Foundation have launched the Deltakit Community Fund, a program that pays outside developers to build features for Riverlane’s open-source quantum error-correction toolkit. The awards run from $2,000 to $4,000 per project, aimed at foundational pieces like error budgeting, threshold computation, and benchmarking libraries. It’s a small, deliberately structured commitment rather than a large funding push, opening as a pilot with just two projects.

How the Deltakit Community Fund works

Deltakit is Riverlane’s open-source toolkit for developing quantum error correction, the layer of software that catches and fixes the constant errors that would otherwise wreck a quantum computation. According to the July 28 press release, the new fund is a quarterly, rolling program that pays contributors to implement small and medium features and merge them back into the main package. The Unitary Foundation, a nonprofit focused on open-source quantum software, runs the program through its existing merit-review process, and Riverlane supplies the technical oversight, sets the project criteria, and signs off on milestones.

The initiative grows out of unitaryHACK26, the Foundation’s June hackathon, which by its own reported figures drew more than 1,000 developers who closed 165 bounties for nearly $18,000 in total. The fund is meant to turn that one-off burst into a steady pipeline. As Marco Ghibaudi, VP Engineering at Riverlane, said:

“unitaryHACK showed us there’s real appetite among developers to work on the foundational infrastructure quantum computing needs. The Deltakit Community Fund helps turn that momentum into something more lasting.”

Why small open-source grants matter for quantum error correction

Read the size honestly. This is a pilot launching with two active developer projects for the second half of 2026, and the awards are in the low thousands, so it’s a genuine but modest contribution to open-source tooling, not a major grant program. Riverlane’s billing as “the world leader in quantum error correction” is its own label, and the hackathon totals are the Foundation’s own numbers.

The reason it’s worth noting sits in the topic. Error correction is the bottleneck standing between today’s noisy machines and useful ones, and much of the tooling around it is going open-source, from NVIDIA’s open-source AI decoder to the decoder work at Quantum X Labs. The threshold and benchmarking features this fund targets are exactly what researchers use to judge new schemes like IQM’s directional tile codes or the trapped-ion codes that recently caught up with superconductors. Riverlane itself works this problem across the industry, including its role in the Quantinuum and Rolls-Royce turbine-simulation project.
